Exceptional three-panel folding screen with studded panels and Verdure-style upholstery, 1950s. The Verdure style (from the French "verdure" or "vert," meaning greenery) is a type of textile art that reached its peak during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was characterized by natural themes, lush landscapes with exuberant foliage, a predominance of the color green in a wide variety of shades, and often included small figures of birds or animals among the vegetation. Vegetation and the natural landscape are the absolute protagonists. This style originated primarily in Flanders (Belgium), notably in cities like Oudenarde, and later in France, in the renowned workshops of Aubusson and Lille. They were considered luxury items, commissioned by the aristocracy to decorate and insulate their castles and palaces from the cold. Today, the term is still used to describe textiles and wallpapers inspired by these classic designs.
