Oil on canvas by the Ghent artist Thomas Huyghe (°1971). Painted in 2004.
Thomas Huyghe, painter and sculptor, works with the surface of things: his language can convey a gently stylized grin or offer a layered structure of meandering associations or assumptions. As an artist, he is strongly convinced of the potential sobriety of an image, regardless of the importance of detail. Images of the public domain are so ubiquitous that they become almost transparent or interchangeable, but in Thomas Huyghe they still become human through the way they are integrated into his objects. His refined craftsmanship, with attention to finish and detail, combines recognizable images and signs that result in a visual language that repels but also attracts.
