Magnificent table lamp from the Danish firm Hanne Stentøj, 1960s. It is made of glazed stoneware ceramic with a geometric design in different blue and earth tones, and with an abstract pattern, both in relief and painted. It can be fitted into the stylistic framework of modern Scandinavian design.
On a turquoise base color it features a design of a navy blue poly-lobed figure that inside houses a series of circles arranged in a square. On the sides it shows circular patterns in darker blue. The neck of the lamp rises narrow, with some protrusions that bring dynamism to the figure. It has a socket and complete wiring, all functional. It lacks shade or lampshade, includes Scandinavian system to install it.
The stentøj, or stoneware in Spanish, is a high-fired ceramic (between 1100 and 1300 degrees), resistant and durable, which also has a great importance in the Danish ceramic tradition. It is known for its durability and characteristic aesthetics. It is composed of a mixture of clay, quartz and feldspar, which after firing becomes hard and porous, and may or may not be glazed.
About Scandinavian Modern style and design
When we refer to the Nordic style or Scandinavian design, we are talking about the northern European countries, precisely Sweden and Norway, but it extends to Denmark, Finland and Iceland. This style is marked by its functionality, utility, formality, minimalism, timelessness and durability, use of local and environmentally friendly materials, such as wood. The stylistic elegance we know came thanks to the influence of the decorative movements of the early twentieth century (Art Nouveau or Jugendstil) and with the simplicity and purity of the artistic movements of the interwar period (Constructivism, De Stijl, The Bauhaus...) It is important the reference point that was the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, where designers mixed local materials with modernity, to create comfortable and bright places.
In 1954 the concept of "Scandinavian design" was coined, due to an exhibition that toured North America with that name, promoting both the lifestyle and decoration of the Nordic countries. The organicism of the 60's and 70's was already present in the Scandinavian style, and in modern materials it found a way to materialize the ideas of the designers.
