Originally, this lamp was intended to be a ceiling light, but the metal base or foot it currently has was added so that it could be used as a table lamp. It also retains the wiring and stem for installation as a ceiling light.

About Murano Glass
Venetian glass is the result of a fascinating combination of artisanal tradition and sophisticated industrial techniques, uniting manual skill with technological innovation. This fusion, which has endured throughout the centuries, is at the heart of the rich tradition of Italian glass. The famous Murano glass was born out of a prohibition: although glass had been manufactured in Venice for centuries, in 1291, during the Venetian Republic, its production was banned in the city to prevent fires caused by the high temperatures of the furnaces and to keep the art of glassmaking a secret. All glassmakers were forced to relocate to Murano, and production was restricted to this location.
