Carl Fagerlund: Many museums, churches, and headquarters of major companies house the works of the Scandinavian modernist lighting designer Carl Fagerlund. Initially an illustration teacher, Fagerlund moved into the world of lighting in the 1940s, with the advantage of an artist's eye. Today, his table lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces, and other lighting fixtures grace homes and continue to captivate collectors worldwide. In the early 1940s, Fagerlund taught drawing to aspiring artists at Solbacka läroverk, a Swedish private boarding school modeled after successful institutions of its kind in the United Kingdom. Shortly afterward, he accepted a position designing provocative wall sconces and other light fixtures in brass and textured glass for a Stockholm manufacturing company called ASEA (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget, or Swedish General Electric Limited Company). However, Fagerlund is best known for his work at Orrefors Glassworks, a legendary glassworks in Småland that gained worldwide acclaim after showcasing a range of decorative objects and art glass at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts—the major design fair that brought Art Deco to the world's attention. Fagerlund joined Orrefors in 1946 and, for over three decades, designed pendant lights, recessed lighting, a range of Murano glass pieces, and other richly intricate mid-century modernist lighting fixtures. Fagerlund's designs can be found at the Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde site, a museum-castle that was once the private residence of royalty, the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo, and the headquarters of General Motors, U.S.A. in Detroit, Michigan.
