Product description
Table lamp, bronze and bent glass, Muller Frères, Art Deco, 1930s – Luneville, France Materials: Bent glass and bronze Signature: Muller Frères (Co.) Style: Art Deco Period: 1930s Country of origin: Luneville, France Good condition considering its age and use Overall dimensions: 53 x 35 x 35 cm A splendid Art Deco table lamp made in early 20th-century France, signed by Muller Frères. Elegant and delicate, it features a slender bronze base supporting a frosted, bent glass shade. It displays the decorative motifs characteristic of the style. The term Art Deco was coined in the 1960s to refer to the art that emerged during the interwar period. It was a style that developed across all facets of design and reached its peak at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris (1925). Characterized by its use of straight lines and geometric volumes, it emerged from a combination of various trends. Some of the major influences on Art Deco include avant-garde art, mechanization, and archaeological discoveries in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It differs from other artistic periods in that it is a purely decorative style, in which artists focused on creating attractive and balanced pieces that reflected the society of the time. Made with high-quality materials, this exquisite table lamp is a testament to the art and craftsmanship of the early 20th century. Muller Frères (Co.) The Müller brothers were a family of renowned glass artisans originally from the Moselle region of France. There were ten siblings in total—nine brothers and one sister—all involved in glassmaking. Initially, several of them worked in glass factories in Saint-Louis, but during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), the family was evacuated to Lunéville. Around 1885, two of the brothers, Désiré and Eugène, joined the workshop of Émile Gallé, a master of Art Nouveau glass, where they worked in the engraving and cutting departments. They were later joined by other brothers, including Henri, Pierre, and Victor. In 1895, Henri Müller decided to go into business for himself and founded his own glass workshop in Lunéville. Gradually, the other brothers joined him, establishing the company Muller Frères, which soon specialized in the production of Art Nouveau glass pieces, applying the knowledge acquired in Gallé's workshop. Their work was highly regarded, distinguished by its technical and artistic quality. In 1910, the company began manufacturing lamps in collaboration with Chapelle, reaching its peak and employing up to 300 workers. Production focused on vases, lampshades, and chandeliers, often incorporating layered and colored glass, characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. After World War I, the Art Deco style began to gain popularity, influencing the Müller brothers' creations. However, the company was impacted by the Great Depression and ceased production in 1933. Three years later, the factory closed permanently, bringing an end to the Müller brothers' successful career in creating art glass.
