Black Stained Oak Slatted Bench or Daybed on Sculptural Solid Wood Supports
Designed by Charlotte Perriand in Tokyo in 1953, the Refolo is a distilled expression of her humanist and architectural approach to furniture. Rather than designing a conventional seat, Perriand conceived a low horizontal plane that could adapt to multiple uses and spatial contexts. The design reflects her deep engagement with Japanese living culture, where simplicity, proportion, and flexibility are essential.
The Refolo is composed of 19 parallel wooden slats in black stained oak, creating a rhythmic and graphic surface in which structure and aesthetics are fully unified. The solid wood supports give the piece a strong architectural presence while maintaining visual lightness. The construction is honest and legible, with no superfluous elements.
Padded seating elements can be discreetly anchored onto the surface using a simple fixing system, allowing them to be positioned freely along the length. This modularity makes the Refolo equally suitable as a bench, daybed, or low table, adapting naturally to living spaces, gallery interiors, or architectural environments.
This design philosophy closely relates to Perriand’s later work in the early 1960s for large-scale projects such as Cansado in Mauritania, developed with Steph Simon. There, the same principles applied: furniture as part of a broader social and spatial vision, focused on sobriety, modularity, and everyday use. Reissued by Cassina as part of the I Maestri collection, the Refolo remains remarkably contemporary and highly collectible.
