Elles BB, an artist "in" format.
At a later age she started painting, first with some shaky steps, but soon she experienced appreciation and recognition in her surroundings and after a few years also abroad.
When you ask her to tell something about herself or write a piece, she says, "I paint."
That statement is also characteristic of her work, which is what she does.

When you ask her to tell something about herself or to write something down, she says, "I paint". That statement is significant for her work, it is what she does.
All her life she has been involved in design, interior design and fashion. She has worked for a number of well-known Dutch interior designers and for a long time had a store in Deventer. First vintage and curios and later American seconds combined with fashion. Always she has tried to make her surroundings beautiful and beautifying. She can only find peace in a harmonious environment. And if that is not there she creates it.
All her life she has been involved in design, decoration and fashion. As such she worked for a number of famous Dutch interior architects. She herself had a shop in Deventer for a long time. First vintage and curiosities and later American seconds in combination with fashion. She always tried to beautify her environment. She can only find rest and peace in an harmonious environment. And when there is none she will create it.
So why did you start painting, I asked. Her answer was astonishing. You expect a whole story about education, art school and abroad. But she said, "I was at Leen Bakker with my sister and my sister bought some small canvases and then I thought, let me try that too."
Why did you start painting, I asked. Her answer was amazing. You would expect quite a story about training, art school and being abroad. But she said, "I was with my sister at an art supply shop and my younger sister bought a number of small canvases and then I thought, let's give it a try."
Anyone can put something on a canvas, but you can't immediately call it art. That is ultimately what your surroundings do. And those surroundings, they get bigger because you stand out.
Elles prefers to paint on large canvases with a lot of panache. You could almost say she models her canvases. She almost never works with a brush, but often with putty knives or anything within reach. She usually works "wet in wet" because she is in a hurry. She says she is then in a "flow" and she can't stop.
Most artists, you talk to, say they have a representation of something. Elles doesn't have that, she can't visually imagine anything. That means she starts a work with a vague feeling and then something emerges. And only then does she see what it becomes.
Anyone can put something on a canvas, but you cannot describe that as being Art right away. That is up to the spectator. That environment gets bigger because you are noticed. Elles paints large canvases with panache. You might say that she sculpts her canvases. She hardly ever uses a brush, but mostly she works with a painters knife or anything else within reach. Usually she works "wet in wet" because she is always in a hurry. She says to be in a "flow" and cannot stop. Most artists, you meet, say that see something in vision. Elles can't, she cannot visualize anything in front of her mind's eye. It means for her that she starts working with a vague feeling and then the creation comes to be. And by that time she sees what she made after all.
Many artists work in a certain theme or subject. Elles has that to a limited extent. She does have periods when she produces similar paintings. But then comes a turning point and she makes something totally different. Often also in a short or longer series.
Partly thanks to her website www.EllesBB.nl, not only have clients been able to find her, but she is and is regularly asked at home and abroad for exhibitions in galleries and at exhibitions. By now she has been featured five times in Dutch and foreign books.

In the meanwhile, her work can be admired in five Dutch and foreign books already.
