ris Knikker (1887–1962) was a painter from The Hague, trained at the Academy in The Hague and working at Rozenburg. He became known for his Hague School-style landscapes, particularly his misty polder paintings. His style strongly resembled that of J.H. Weissenbruch, which led to his work often being resold as the latter.
The pseudonyms H. Endlich and Henk Welther appear frequently on his paintings. The Welther brothers, art dealers in The Hague, purchased many unsigned works by the Knikkers and recognized them under these names themselves, especially for the German and English-speaking markets.
The canvas depicts a windmill surrounded by an atmospheric waterscape.
