Impressive set of two vintage ‘Oase’ armchairs, designed in the 1950s by Wim Rietveld and produced by Ahrend de Cirkel in the 1960s. Fun fact: in 1959 (a year after its design), the Oase armchair was awarded the prestigious Signe d’Or prize for furniture design, a major international recognition!
We collected these armchairs, along with a Gispen 1401 armchair, in Rotterdam, a city that was not only rebuilt during the post-war reconstruction but was also shaped by modernization and progressive ideas in architecture and furniture design.
The Oase armchair is not only a textbook example of Dutch design but also symbolizes this important chapter in our design history. It represents a period in which comfort, simplicity, and affordability took center stage. With its clean, minimalist lines, high-quality construction, and thoughtful choice of materials, this is immediately visible and palpable in the design. Upon arrival at our workshop, these design classics have been fully restored, respecting the original design. The metal frames and seat shells have been repainted and shine like new again. Moreover, the construction of these chairs is very special: the ‘shells’ click onto the steel tubes, as it were, a typical Dutch design detail.
The original filling and fabric could not be salvaged and have been replaced with new, sturdy foam and a high-quality yellow wool fabric from Danish Art Weaving, named Highland. This color contrasts beautifully with the black frame and gives the armchairs a fresh, modern look. At the same time, it remains true to the original design, which was often executed in striking colors such as red. In short: two timeless armchairs with a rich history that can be used with love for years to come.
