This is the iconic DB51 sideboard, designed by Cees Braakman for the renowned Dutch manufacturer Pastoe in 1951. This piece of furniture is a representative example of the early post-war Dutch Design movement, characterized by the innovative use of curved plywood for the distinctive loop legs.
The cabinet is crafted from birch wood and veneer, creating a warm and natural appearance. The design stands out with its asymmetrical sliding doors in a contrasting color palette of black and beige, featuring subtle metal handles. Behind the doors lies a well-thought-out interior with wooden shelves and multiple drawers, the top one of which is equipped with a black felt inlay for storing cutlery. The original Pastoe stamp is present on the back, confirming the authenticity of this collector's item.
The sideboard is in good structural condition, retaining its structural integrity. Over the decades, the wood has developed an authentic patina that emphasizes the historical character of the furniture. All moving parts, including the sliding doors and drawers, function properly. The finish (lacquer) needs to be repaired: it is damaged in places.
This sideboard comes into its own perfectly in a modern or mid-century inspired interior. It not only offers practical storage space but also serves as an architectural statement in a living room or spacious hallway.
