Refined pastel portrait of a young woman on paper, titled “Allegory”, 19th century. It follows an original model by the renowned Italian Rococo painter Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757). A young woman is depicted in three-quarter view with an innocent expression, glancing slightly to the left. She appears semi-nude, with a light gauze draped over her shoulder, revealing her breasts. In her hair, she wears a turquoise diadem and a floral arrangement.
Despite the neutral, flat background, the artist manages to create space using a meticulous and precise technique, achieving a detailed representation of the woman's facial features. It retains its original oval, gilded wooden frame, protected by glass. Pastel became a very popular technique in the 19th century, especially for portraits. This technique requires no solvents, is applied directly to the work surface, and allows for a richness of color and detail.
