Pair of Chippendale Chairs in Lacquered Wood, Following the Style of Pierre Lottier, 1970s – Spain
An exceptional pair of Chippendale-style chairs, lacquered in red wood in the Andalusian style, following the design of the prestigious French designer Pierre Lottier, circa 1970s. Oriental-inspired decorations with gilded chinoiserie.
The chairs have a robust structure with curved front legs, known as "cabriole legs." They follow the English Chippendale style, a furniture style named after Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779), one of the great English cabinetmakers. In short, it is a blend of Rococo, Neoclassical, and Baroque with certain Oriental influences. It is an elegant, sophisticated, and majestic style. It is characterized by the prominence of wood, especially fine woods, which were often paired with high-quality, patterned textiles (curtains, rugs, upholstery, etc.), where oriental motifs and scenes were paramount. Curved legs are one of its defining features. One of these pieces has lost its stretcher bars.
The influence of Pierre Lottier, a French designer and architect born in 1888 in France, which would soon become the epicenter of an artistic revolution, is also evident. One of the distinctive characteristics of his style and work was his skill in using exotic and rare materials in his creations. Precious woods, fine lacquers, ivory, and other luxury materials came together in his hands to form furniture that was not only functional but also true works of art. His style was a fusion of the modern and the traditional, which allowed him to create pieces that felt both timeless and emblematic of their era. But his designs were appreciated not only for their aesthetics but also for their technical sophistication. Lottier had a keen eye for detail and a knack for balancing opulence with elegance, which made him highly sought after by the wealthiest and most discerning clients of Parisian society. His creations, which blend the exotic with the modern, remain a testament to his creative genius and his ability to capture the spirit of an era.
