Pair of Arita porcelain plates/trays, 20th century – Japan
Exquisite pair of Arita porcelain or Imari porcelain plates or trays. Arita porcelain or Imari porcelain is the Western name for porcelain products made in the town of Arita. It dates back to the 17th century, when a Korean artisan discovered a kaolin deposit in the Arita region in 1616. It is worth noting that, before this discovery, all pottery in Japan was imported from China and Korea. Korean firing techniques were then combined with Chinese influences in the designs. It is also known as Imari porcelain, as it was exported from the port of Imari in the 17th century. Early productions were characterized by elaborate cobalt blue designs on a white background, as is the case with this pair. The pattern features an intricate and stylized floral design in deep cobalt blue on a white background, a classic motif in Arita porcelain. These pieces reflect the high quality of Japanese porcelain.
