This stunning oil-on-canvas landscape is by the Catalan artist Ricard Arenys Galdón, a prominent painter and engraver, renowned especially for his portraits and landscapes. He excelled in these genres thanks to his style, which evolved from realism toward a freer, more expressionistic interpretation. Throughout his career, he maintained a deep connection with nature and the rural environment, recurring themes in his work, often reflected in impressionistic landscapes and portraits of everyday life.
Arenys was part of the second generation of Catalan artists who, after the Spanish Civil War, sought to revive landscape painting, albeit with a freer and more modern interpretation. In his early years, his style was closer to realism, but he soon gravitated toward a looser, more spontaneous technique, influenced by French painting and artists such as Van Gogh and Cézanne. Through quick brushstrokes and vibrant colors, his works express the movement of light and the transformation of nature, without adhering strictly to exact representation.
These are the characteristics we find in our work, characterized by its Impressionist style, in which light and color are key elements for conveying the atmosphere of the landscape. Through loose, gestural brushstrokes, Arenys captures the essence of nature without focusing on precise details. What captures our attention as viewers is the atmosphere itself, generated with a burst of color.
The scene depicts a green, wooded landscape. The color green is displayed in all its splendor, with a wide range of tones that permeate everything, from the trees and grass to the sky. As is typical of Impressionism, these colors are not exact representations of reality, but rather an emotional interpretation of nature. The various forms are modeled with thick brushstrokes that blend together to give a sense of movement. The inclusion of a human figure, who appears to be a shepherd or farm worker, adds a touch of humanity and rural context, although he remains in the background and does not seek to dominate the scene.
Ricard Arenys Galdón (Barcelona, 1914 – 1977)
Trained in Barcelona, Ricard Arenys held several exhibitions of his work from 1934 onwards, both in his hometown and in Madrid, Paris, and London. He participated in the Barcelona Spring Exhibition in 1934 and in the National Exhibition held in the same city in 1944. At the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1945, he was awarded the third medal, also participating in the 1950 edition, and in 1955 he was awarded the second medal. He is currently represented in numerous public and private collections, including that of the AMYC Foundation Museum in Madrid.
