A luminous sculptural crystal bowl from Kosta Boda’s sought-after “Olivia” series, designed by renowned Swedish glass artist Anna Ehrner during her early years at the manufactory (active 1974–1979). This piece exemplifies the experimental, elemental minimalism that defined Ehrner’s work: forms reduced to pure rhythm, light, and material presence.
Design & Aesthetic
The bowl is shaped as a softly undulating, five-lobed star, deeply ribbed and optically alive. Light is caught, bent, and multiplied across the thick crystal walls, creating liquid shadows and spectral reflections — a signature effect of Ehrner’s approach to sculptural transparency.
The substantial weight and clarity of the crystal highlight Kosta Boda’s mastery in cold-working and hot-shaping heavy glass. From above, the bowl displays a hypnotic floral geometry; from the side, it becomes a prismatic object whose interior and exterior volumes seem to shift depending on the angle of illumination.
About the Designer – Anna Ehrner (b. 1948)
Ehrner joined Kosta Boda in 1974 and quickly distinguished herself through her uncompromising focus on form and material behaviour. Her practice has always been grounded in experimentation with light, colour suspension, and the tactile essence of glass. She would later become one of Kosta Boda’s defining design voices, celebrated internationally for her restrained yet powerful sculptural idiom.
