Warren Platner
US (1919–2006)
Warren Platner attended Cornell University and received his degree in architecture in 1941. He subsequently worked with legendary architects such as Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen, and I.M. Pei before establishing his own architectural firm. Throughout his career, Platner made several notable architectural contributions, including the Georg Jensen Design Center and the Windows on the World restaurant in the World Trade Center, both in New York City.
However, it was his furniture collection for Knoll that brought Platner worldwide recognition. The Platner Collection, originally introduced by Knoll in 1966, is an icon of modern furniture. Platner personally developed the production techniques for the complex designs, requiring each chair to have over a thousand welds and more than a hundred cylindrical steel rods. Knoll also introduced a Platner-designed collection for executive offices.
