Product description
This table has an Art Deco appearance that certainly fits the Amsterdam School style. However, the table originates from the eastern part of the Netherlands, in the city of Enschede, and was made by a renowned interior design company at the time. Top diameter: 60 centimeters Height: 60 centimeters Bottom plate diameter: 38 centimeters The Poessée Home Furnishings company was a well-known specialty store in Enschede. Historical advertisements and archives indicate that its business period was certainly from the 1930s to the 1970s (and possibly the early 1980s). The store was located for a long time on Haverstraat (including at numbers 21-23), a major shopping street for high-quality stores in the center of Enschede at the time. The company was known for its complete interior design, including furniture, carpets, and curtains. There is a sticker on the bottom. The "furniture sticker" is typical of the period after World War II, the reconstruction period (1950s and 1960s), when such stickers were routinely placed on the back or in drawers of high-quality furniture. It is characteristic that the French spelling is used on this furniture sticker. This would place the furniture in an earlier era. Regarding the spelling: The spelling 'Enschede' with an acute accent on the final 'e' (Enschedé) was mainly used in the 19th and early 20th centuries, influenced by French, to indicate the correct pronunciation (with a clear 'ee' sound, as in French). However, it is no longer used in official Dutch or in the local Twente dialects, where it is pronounced dialectally (as 'Ensche-de', with an 'uh' sound). In the 19th century, there was considerable French influence in the Netherlands, and the acute accent (é) was used to mark a long "ee" sound, as in French (for example, in "café"). The table may have been produced earlier and may have been displayed in a shop for a while before being sold. Considering its age, the table has aged beautifully. The oak base is damaged, with a small piece of splintered wood. The top also has a small stain. The wood of the table has few knots, and as previously mentioned, this shop sold high-quality furniture, which is certainly evident from this. The table stands on four legs, making it very stable. Photos have been taken of all sides; please examine them carefully as they are part of the description. This is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. You can see from the photos that the table has always been well-maintained. Due to its size, the table has a higher shipping cost. Please review these before bidding. The table will be well packaged and shipped insured. If you bid from the Netherlands, I will be happy to give you the opportunity to collect the table.
