This striking portrait of a man, "The Old Man," was painted in 1901 and is signed "F. Peters-Weber 1901 Altona" on the front. The serious-looking, bearded man against a dark background is painted in finely nuanced shades of brown and black, conveying a concentrated, almost intimate atmosphere. Carlos Friedrich Peters-Weber (1874–1917) came from Meldorf and studied at the School of Applied Arts in Hamburg as well as at the academies in Munich, Berlin, and Weimar, under Hans Olde, among others. He was a member of the Altona Artists' Association and worked primarily as a portrait painter in Hamburg. The remnant of an exhibition label, referring to the Great Berlin Art Exhibition of 1901, where this work was shown, is affixed to the painting; a copy of the 1901 exhibition catalog, in which the painting is listed, is included. The oil painting is in good, age-appropriate condition with minor restorations. The original frame has a defect in the upper left corner. https://www.abendblatt.de/nachrichten/article215516311/Fritz-Peters-Weber-wurde-nur-43-Jahre-alt.html https://histgymbib.hypotheses.org/11923 https://www.christianeum.de/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Jahre
