Rietveld developed the design whilst working for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam, with the brief to create a chair suitable for serial production. He took the demands of the market into account, without compromising comfort and relaxation. This led to the chair's various components being designed as separate elements. The Utrecht armchair became an icon of both the Neoplastic movement and Rietveld's experimental approach to design. The structure consists of a main frame of tubular steel with elastic straps for the seat and backrest, while the armrests are made of solid poplar wood. The padding consists of polyurethane foam of varying densities and a polyester layer with resin and light velvet.
