Spectacular blown glass vase, the work of Swedish artist and designer Monica Backström for Kosta Boda. The surface is a blue that plays with intensity and transparency. A serpentine, aqua-green shape entwines around the neck of the piece, lending originality and dynamism. Crafted using traditional and artisanal methods, each piece is unique, durable, and long-lasting. It represents the union of tradition and modernity. Brand sticker. Hand-signed and numbered on the base, 49/06. Kosta Boda was founded in 1742 in Sweden and has expanded significantly throughout the world. The designers who work for this company come from diverse backgrounds, but all share a passion for glass and an innovative approach to crystal and glass design. Kosta Boda offers inspiring art glass objects and contemporary interior design, inspired by the tradition of Swedish design. Monica Astrid Stensdotter Backström (1939-2020) Monica Backström worked for Kosta Boda for over 40 years, but is especially renowned, including internationally, for her “Mushrooms” collection from the 1970s. Backström was the daughter of textile designer Astrid Sampe and Sten Hultberg, who worked in advertising and later started a textile business. She studied at the Konstfack and Hegre Konstindustriella Skolan. In 1965, she won a competition organized for Kosta Glasbruk’s centenary, which led to her being employed as a glass designer at the company. Between the late 1960s and 1970, she also designed clothing, jewelry, furniture and household objects, created public works, and collaborated with artists and designers such as Erik Héglund, Ulrica Hydman Vallien, Bertil Vallien, Ann Wolff, and Gáran Wárff. Her work has been exhibited at the Kalmar Art Museum, Nationalmuseum, and the Róhsska Museum, among other galleries and institutions, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and the Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands, as well as in collections in the United States and Japan.
