Austrian Jugendstil Iridescent Art Glass Vase – Multicolor Feathered Décor, ca. 1900–1910
A vibrant and exceptionally decorative Jugendstil art glass vase, hand-blown in Austria around 1900–1910. The vessel displays a striking multicolor feathered décor in shades of opaline pink, turquoise green, lilac, and soft gold—an iridescent palette strongly associated with early 20th-century Austrian and Bohemian art glass workshops such as Loetz, Kralik, and Pallme-König.
Design & Surface
The vase features a tapered conical body rising to a broad, outwardly pulled rim—an elegant form typical of Central European Art Nouveau glass. What makes this piece particularly compelling is the complex surface technique:
Feathered and Combed Pattern: Multi-layered trails of color stretched and combed across the body, creating a dynamic, cellular pattern reminiscent of Loetz “Papillon” and Kralik “Feathered” decors.
Iridescent Satin Finish: A soft, glowing irisation that shifts with the light, lending the object a jewel-like presence.
Organic Color Transitions: Warm green, pale rose, lavender, and amber tones melt into one another—an aesthetic fully aligned with the Jugendstil fascination with fluid, nature-derived ornament.
The underside shows a ground pontil, confirming individual hand-production rather than mould-blown manufacture.
Context
Around 1900, Austrian and Bohemian glasshouses were at the forefront of European Art Nouveau. Firms such as Johann Loetz Witwe, Kralik, Pallme-König & Habel, and Rindskopf pioneered new iridescent techniques, color layering, and experimental surface treatments. This vase stands firmly within that tradition: a sculptural object intended as both utility and artwork.
While the vase is not signed—typical for many workshop pieces of the period—the form, color composition, and décor technique strongly situate it within Austro-Bohemian Jugendstil production, ca. 1900–1910.
Condition
Very good antique condition. Light wear consistent with age; no cracks or restorations observed. Minimal expected shelf wear to base.
