Product description
Acrylic on canvas “Checkerboard Landscape”, Andrés Segovia, 20th century – Argentina / Spain A work with a unique, somber, and overwhelming atmosphere. It recalls the legacy of the great Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978), the leading figure of the metaphysical school. At the same time, it inspires peace and tranquility. This work by Andrés Segovia directly evokes De Chirico's masterpiece “The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon,” created in Florence in 1910; this work is considered the beginning of this movement focused on metaphysical philosophical thought, closely linked to the reflections of great philosophers such as Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. The landscape engages in a dialogue with urban aesthetics, filtered through a futuristic lens. The work is divided vertically into two states: one with clarity, as if it were a cold sunset, which establishes depth with the checkerboard floor. The study of the simulated horizon is impeccable but unreal, as there is no element that alludes to the real world. To break the flatness of the upper portion, the artist opts for a superimposition of geometric forms, within each of which he has carried out a meticulously detailed chromatic study using small rollers. A subtle, blurred cloud is visible parallel to the horizon line. In the center of the composition, small flashes of light in a yellow and green tone are also visible. It possesses a powerful aesthetic, with a metaphysical, symbolist interpretation and a touch of futurism. Andrés Segovia (1929–1996) Andrés Segovia was the son of the famous guitarist Andrés Segovia Portillo (1893–1987) and his first wife, Adelaida del Gabucio. An Argentine-Spanish visual artist, he began his artistic training in Buenos Aires before moving to Europe to further his career. In the early 1950s, he settled in Paris, where he became involved with the artistic circles of the School of Paris and was influenced by existentialism and postwar realism. He developed an international career marked by his mixed cultural heritage and his stylistic evolution toward surrealism and geometric abstraction. Through his pictorial expression, he headlined numerous solo and group exhibitions within European avant-garde circles. His work is exhibited in numerous museums worldwide, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Düsseldorf. He held numerous exhibitions in cities such as Paris, Geneva, and New York. By 1986, his works were already being featured in major international auctions. Throughout his career, his work was collected by notable figures such as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
