Product description
Very rare and beautiful candlestick, purchased in 1970s, early 1980s. The candlestick is made of lucite/acrylic, a hard plastic, with brass/gilt details. Due to the use of a single piece of bent and twisted acrylic to form the whimsical base, this candlestick is often called the Pretzel (Pretzel). The design of the candlestick is by Elaine Bscheider for Dorothy C. Thorpe.
Dorothy Thorpe, based in California, began designing glass pieces in the 1940s. Her work was initially sold in a small Hollywood gift store and was soon picked up by larger, well-known stores. Her clientele grew to include such famous names as Clark Gable, Princess Grace of Monaco and the Shah of Iran. In the mid-20th century she began experimenting with lucite with the design of this Pretzel candlestick generally attributed to Elaine Bscheider for Dorothy Thorpe Inc. The candlesticks were never marked, but were sold with the Dorothy Thorpe label. The candlestick is in excellent condition with minimal signs of use.
