The Acrilica 281 table lamp, designed by Joe Colombo in collaboration with his brother Gianni Colombo for Oluce in 1962, is a milestone in Italian lighting design. The innovative use of curved, transparent acrylic allows light to flow from the metal base through the lamp, creating a glowing, sculptural arc.
The Acrilica won Joe Colombo the gold medal at the 1964 Milan Triennale and later became part of important museum collections worldwide. Upon its debut, the lamp astonished audiences, resembling a kinetic sculpture more than a conventional light source, while simultaneously demonstrating a groundbreaking technical feat. At the time, the lamp pushed the boundaries of what was possible with plastic, combining art, design, and innovation in a single luminous form.
