Rare large Kokeshi by Ozawa Shiun. Ozawa Shiun (小沢子雲) is a respected artist known for his Creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi, a modern style in which artists are free in form and painting, in contrast to strictly traditional styles. Many of his designs feature incised floral patterns, such as plum blossoms or maple leaves, rather than just painted decorations. His kokeshi often feature a characteristic, friendly smile and soft facial features. The doll has a characteristic dark brown 'okappa' hairstyle and a black kimono decorated with floral motifs and a red obi (belt). Ozawa Shiun's work is distinguished by the use of techniques such as pyrography (wood burning) or incisions to add details such as the hairline and patterns on the kimono. The height is 23 cm; please view the photos for the condition. NB: The kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
