Product description
This early oil painting by Zacharie Noterman (1820 in Ghent – 1890 in Paris) is signed and dated 1850. A unique and rare scene by this Flemish master. Very detailed composition. Dimensions: 44 x 48 cm (excluding frame); 72 x 80 cm (including frame) Sold with the original prestigious frame Biography: Zacharie Noterman was born in Ghent as the son of a decorative painter. He was initially trained by his older brother Emmanuel Noterman, a genre and animal painter active in Antwerp. Noterman continued his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Zacharie Noterman lived with his brother in Antwerp. Later, he moved to Paris, where he exhibited his works at the Salon. His final participations in the Paris Salon date from the years 1879 and 1880. Noterman primarily painted scenes with animals, including portraits of dogs and scenes with cats and dogs. He was particularly interested in the subject of singeries: humorous paintings and etchings of monkeys performing human activities. The monkeys in these scenes are often dressed in costumes, which lends a comical effect to their 'imitation' of specific human actions (often a vice such as smoking or gambling) or professions such as dentist, lawyer, painter, art critic, and so on. Noterman's work demonstrates a growing interest in realism in Belgian painting. Noterman is the creator of various etchings that deal with subjects similar to his paintings. His singeries, in particular, were very popular; between 1863 and 1866, he was commissioned by the publisher Cadart in Paris to create three original etchings on this subject. The works of Zacharie Noterman are part of various public collections, including: - Petit Palais (Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris), France - National Gallery of Canada (Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada) in Ottawa, Canada - Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Cognac, France - Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dunkerque, France - British Museum in London, United Kingdom (primarily graphic works/etchings) - Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London
