Mas sur le chemin de Servières, à St-Rémy de Provence, March 2001
Oil on canvas, signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse
Description
This serene Provençal landscape by Yann Rebecq depicts a sun-drenched mas—a traditional farmhouse—nestled among olive trees and cypress silhouettes along the road to Servières, near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Painted in March 2001, the work captures the distinctive luminosity and tranquility of southern France.
The scene unfolds in harmonious, balanced tones: the house glows in warm peach and apricot shades, accented by turquoise shutters and a soft blue garden gate. Olive trees frame the foreground with silvery-green foliage, their roots anchored in the ochre soil, while behind them the pale limestone hills of the Alpilles rise beneath a clear Provençal sky. The brushwork is broad and expressive, lending the surface a tactile rhythm that echoes the natural textures of the landscape.
Rather than focusing on strict realism, Rebecq distills the essence of place through color and light. His palette conveys warmth and quiet stillness, evoking the scent of the dry earth, the hum of cicadas, and the timeless calm of a summer afternoon. The painting feels both intimate and universal—a poetic meditation on the enduring beauty of Provence.
About the Artist
Yann Rebecq is a French painter born in 1955, whose work bridges the radiance of the South Pacific and the poetic light of Provence. Having spent his early years in New Caledonia and the Pacific islands, he developed a deep sensitivity to atmosphere and color. In the 1970s, he settled in southern France, where the landscapes of Provence became central to his artistic identity.
He studied with the Provençal masters Eugène Baboulène and Henri Pertus, drawing from them a sense of balance between color, structure, and emotion. Rebecq’s paintings often hover between figuration and lyrical abstraction, exploring subjects such as seascapes, villages, interiors, and scenes of quiet contemplation.
His works have been exhibited widely in France, the United States, Korea, and China, and are represented in both private and public collections. In 2013, twenty-five of his paintings were acquired by Chinese museums. Throughout his career, Rebecq has remained faithful to a visual language rooted in light, harmony, and the subtle dialogue between the real and the imagined—a testament to his enduring connection with the landscapes of Provence.
