An exquisite Corbeille armchair made around 1820 in France, in the Napoleon III style and period, crafted from carved and gilded wood. The backrest features a sinuous curve, following the traditional Corbeille design, and is finished with an exceptionally high-quality floral crest. This piece possesses a striking aesthetic, suitable for any space and setting, even as a striking contrast in contemporary decor. The Corbeille armchair is a type of sofa with an oval base, whose backrest curves gently forward and downward to form the arms. This style originated in France during the 18th century and remains an icon of elegance.
The seat, backrest, and armrests have been newly upholstered in an original combination of two fabrics from the prestigious and renowned brand Pierre Frey, a maison founded in 1935 in Paris by the designer of the same name. Maison Pierre Frey now offers wallpapers and wall coverings, rugs, decorative items, and furniture, in addition to fabrics for interior decoration. The sides of the backrest are finished in a muted yellow faux-plain, while the centerpiece is an exquisite fabric with a natural background and floral embroidery. The colorful upholstery adds a modern yet elegant touch that balances the classic feel of the frame.
Style and Period: Napoleon III or Second Empire
The Napoleon III or Second Empire style takes its name from the fact that it originated in France during that period. Strictly speaking, the Second Empire was proclaimed in 1852 and ended in 1870, led by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of the French, although in an artistic sense it extended for a few more years (until 1880), and it was revived in later periods. This style was very popular among the French bourgeoisie. The emperor himself was involved in the artistic development of the time, although more closely linked to architecture. However, it is Empress Eugénie who is credited with the evolution of the decorative arts.
Although inspired by past styles, beginning with Classical Antiquity, the Renaissance, and even the Louis XVI style, which Eugénie greatly admired, the most representative characteristic of the style is its sumptuousness and ostentation, always aspiring to display wealth and opulence. These are highly ornamented pieces.
It is not a style designed specifically for the Second Empire, but rather a revival of the various great French styles of previous centuries, a kind of compilation of French decorative trends. Special reference is made to Louis XIV, Louis XV, Baroque, and Rococo, and gradually to the eclectic Louis XVI style. In short, these decorative styles had positioned France at the forefront of interior design and furniture design in Europe, both for quality and for originality and beauty.
