This solid wood coffee table, technologically extremely complex yet very simple in design, was designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1969 for the Japanese Embassy in Paris.
The idea for this table originated from the impression a colossal rock made on Perriand. The enormous weight of the rock was compensated by the way the waves had eroded it, leaving it smooth. Hence the thick tabletop and the concave edges, which enhance the beauty and give the table a lighter appearance. The contrast between the figurative impact and the rational perception of the object's actual weight makes it unique. Thanks to careful manufacturing techniques, the table is resistant to warping, a common problem with wood. The table has some minor signs of use which, in our view, are consistent with a table based on a table from the 1950s.
