Wolfgang Meer Studio Pottery Sang de Bœuf Ceramic Vase – Bremen, Germany, c. 1970s–1980s
A striking large-scale studio ceramic vase by German ceramic artist Wolfgang Meer of Bremen, distinguished by its elegant minimalist silhouette and richly atmospheric sang de bœuf-inspired glaze. Rising to an impressive 30 cm height, the vessel demonstrates the balance between disciplined form and expressive surface that characterises the finest European studio ceramics of the late twentieth century.
The vase presents a refined elongated bottle form with gently tapering walls culminating in a small, precisely proportioned opening. Its restrained geometry recalls both East Asian ceramic traditions and the modernist reduction favoured by many German studio potters during the post-war period.
Particularly captivating is the glaze. Layers of deep oxblood, burgundy, raspberry red, and dark aubergine dissolve into one another across the surface, creating a remarkable sense of depth and luminosity. Fine crystalline speckling and subtle tonal transitions evoke the celebrated Chinese sang de bœuf glazes that inspired generations of European ceramic artists. Under changing light conditions, the surface shifts from velvety matte crimson to glossy wine-red reflections, giving the vase a constantly evolving presence.
The underside bears the impressed studio mark of Wolfgang Meer, confirming its authorship. While less widely documented than some of his contemporaries, Meer's works are appreciated among collectors of German studio ceramics for their exceptional glaze quality and restrained sculptural forms.
Standing alone, the vase functions as a sculptural object; paired with a single stem or branch, it becomes an elegant focal point in both contemporary and traditional interiors.
