Wiskemann (1852–1909) established in the heart of Brussels from 1872 and specialized in the production of silver-plated white metal.
Belgian silver. Stamped with the manufacturer's mark "Wiskemann", the Swiss cross, and the Arabic numeral "30" together with pattern # 4 and an etched series of numbers. This is a cast of pure silver-plated on an iron core in the style of Sheffield silver. In 1939, a Belgian royal decree required that all silver-plated wares be stamped with 2 hallmarks: one indicating the maker and the other a number indicating the weight of pure silver: in this case, 30 grams.
Bruno Wiskemann was a small but renowned silversmith with shops in Belgium and Switzerland. His work was highly respected and often copied by other silversmiths. His work is rarely seen and is highly sought after. His work dates from the very late 19th century to the 1950s when he sold his business.
Orfèvrerie Wiskemann is one of the most renowned historical names in Belgian goldsmithing. The company is known worldwide for the production of high-quality silver-plated tableware and cutlery.
The Founding and Success
Parisian roots: Founder Otto-Léonard Wiskemann learned the trade in Paris at the renowned Christofle house. There, he witnessed the introduction of electrolytic silver plating firsthand.
Start in Brussels: In 1872, he opened his own workshop in the heart of Brussels.
Focus on the hospitality industry: The company soon specialized in luxury, heavily silver-plated white metal for the upscale hotel and catering industry, cruise ships, and shipping companies.
Sustainable and environmentally conscious
By complementing your interior with vintage items, you are acting in an environmentally conscious manner. After all, no new raw materials need to be used for this product. When you choose vintage, you use what is already available, and that makes it sustainable. You may not be giving these objects a second life, but perhaps even a third or fourth. Vintage products are of high quality and last for several lifetimes for good reason. There is a story behind every vintage product. The often minimal signs of use offer a glimpse into the life of the previous owner. The extent to which these signs of use are present is stated in the description. Photos are part of this description, so please examine them carefully. Vintage (read: used) items sometimes show color variations, uneven wear, and/or normal wear. Please take this into account when making a purchase.
When shipped, the item is carefully packed to prevent damage. I ship in recycled and eco-friendly boxes.
