When The Skin Breaks depicts a face that seems trapped between strength and vulnerability. The gaze is direct and self-assured, yet the surface of the skin is crisscrossed by deep cracks. This creates a sharp contrast between the look and what appears to be taking place beneath the skin. The cracks are not merely a sign of damage but refer to the traces that experiences can leave behind. What appears strong or untouched on the outside may be under tension on the inside. When the skin finally breaks, what remained hidden for a long time becomes visible. The strong chiaroscuro and the almost monochrome grey tones give the work a subdued, raw atmosphere.
