Wendelin Stahl Studio Ceramic Tea Caddy / Lidded Vessel
Germany, 1983
A refined and highly tactile studio ceramic lidded vessel by renowned German ceramic artist Wendelin Stahl, executed in 1983. Combining restrained geometry with subtle material complexity, the object exemplifies the quiet sophistication of late 20th-century German studio pottery rooted in the Westerwald ceramic tradition.
The piece is conceived as a compact spherical container with a perfectly balanced domed lid, creating an almost architectural purity of form. Covered in a softly shimmering grey craquelé glaze with delicate greenish undertones and fine speckling, the surface possesses remarkable depth and nuance. Depending on the light, the glaze shifts between warm stone-grey, pale celadon, and silvery mineral tones.
The finely crackled glossy glaze enhances the meditative simplicity of the form while emphasizing the hand-crafted quality of the ceramic body beneath. The integrated cork element inside the lid reflects the object’s intended function as a tea caddy, while simultaneously adding an additional tactile and sculptural dimension.
Minimal yet deeply material, the vessel stands within the lineage of postwar German studio ceramics that blurred the boundary between utilitarian pottery, sculptural object, and contemplative design.
About the Artist
Wendelin Stahl (1922–2000) was an important German ceramic artist associated with the Westerwald studio pottery movement. Born in Höhr-Grenzhausen, he trained in the ceramic workshop of Kunow & Drosse between 1938 and 1939 before continuing his education in his family’s pottery workshop after 1945.
From 1952 onward, he worked at Burg Coraidelstein in Klotten on the Mosel together with ceramic artist Else Harney. Stahl completed his master examination in Höhr-Grenzhausen in 1955 and later achieved significant international recognition.
In 1977, he received the prestigious first prize at the “Deutsche Keramik 77 Westerwaldpreis” and was appointed member of the Académie Internationale de la Céramique in Geneva. His work is appreciated for its formal restraint, refined glaze experimentation, and balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern ceramic abstraction.
