Auguste Galimard (1813-1880) was a French painter, stained-glass artist, and art critic. He was first a successor to his uncles, the history painter Nicolas-Auguste Hesse and the portraitist Henri-Joseph Hesse, and was later admitted to the studio of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. He was also a student of the sculptor Denis Foyatier.
He participated in the Paris Salon from 1835 to 1880. His painting, The Seduction of Leda, was sent to the 1855 World's Fair but was rejected by the jury. This controversy led to its purchase by Napoleon III and gift to King William I of Württemberg.
He also created the decorations for several stained-glass windows in Paris and the Île-de-France region from 1846 onwards.
Galimard was very active as an art critic and also served as director of the painting school for women in Paris, opened by Louise Marie-Jeanne Hersent.
The work here is a watercolor depicting a woman in the antique style, reflecting the classical beauty codes of the mid-19th century.
It was a popular subject of the time.
It is probably an allegory of abundance.
The woman, with porcelain skin, wears long, curly red hair, held in place by a crown of leaves.
The shifty gaze and slightly drooping head provide the beginnings of future styles of the late 19th century, particularly Symbolism.
She wears an antique-style outfit, a pinkish, almost transparent toga adorned with a brooch.
The drapery details are very fine. The dress is cinched with a blue cord decorated with a Greek frieze.
She is holding a bouquet in her hands.
The work is hand-signed and dated directly on the decoration, in the manner of classical painters.
Classical French School, with a polished finish, with a central composition.
The watercolor is done with a very fine brush, yielding truly exceptional textural details for this technique. The skin is tender, the details precise, and the drapery just right.
The watercolor reveals traces of pencil drawing here and there.
This small-format composition is in the style of one of his notable paintings, The Ode.
Small format. 33x24 cm with frame, 24x16 cm without frame. This type of format is innovative for an academy painter.
Several traces of age, mainly yellowing spots around the edges of the work; refer to the photos.
