This magnificent watercolor depicts a beautiful and serene landscape enlivened by the presence of man and his buildings. Through a sober and restrained color palette ranging from white, yellow, and grayish tones, it conveys an atmosphere of calm that calls for silence. The warmth of the landscape's yellowish tones and the way the light falls on it transport us to a summer sunset. The brushstrokes are loose, thick, and swift, suggesting the possibility that it was painted outdoors, as did the artists of the Barbizon School and the Impressionists with their interest in capturing the effects of light at a particular time of day. The watercolor is framed in a beautiful gilt frame enlivened by plant and floral motifs. This frame was made by the Le Cottage framing house, whose workshop was located in Bordeaux. In addition to producing frames for paintings, lithographs, and prints, they also devoted themselves to restoration and the application of gold leaf. The decoration of this frame begins with the preparation of the wood by sanding it so that the pigment and materials adhere well to the support. A coat of varnish is then applied, and while this varnish is tacky, the gold leaf is applied. Due to its delicacy, the gold leaf must be applied carefully with a polishing brush, a type of flat, handleless brush, usually made of horse or ox hair. Once the leaves are glued to the surface, a paintbrush is used to remove excess parts, smooth the surface, and eliminate any imperfections. Finally, a coat of shellac is applied, a product that prevents the gold leaf from peeling and allows for painting over it, in this case, the plant and floral details.
