The Wassily armchair by Marcel Breuer for Gavina. This iconic model was created by Marcel Breuer in 1925 during his time as director of the Bauhaus carpentry workshop in Dessau, Germany. For its design, he drew inspiration from his Adler bicycle, fascinated by its design and the lightness of its tubular steel frame. Fortunately, he was able to take advantage of a new technique developed by the Mannesmann company, which allowed for the production of seamless steel tubing. Innovative in its materials and technique, this design has endured through successive manufacturers, beginning with the renowned German-Austrian company Thonet, which handled its production until the start of World War II. During this period, it was not called the Wassily but the B3. It was only after the war, when the Italian company Gavina resumed production, that they bestowed this name upon it, in reference to the abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky, who attended the same school. After hearing his classmate's praise for his new creation, the designer decided to create a copy for his private quarters. In 1968, Knoll International acquired Gavina. The Wassily chair was then added to their catalog and is still in production today. The frame is composed of five round, bent, and chromed steel tubes. It is assembled using a screw system and held in place by leather straps, creating a suspended effect. The base has four plastic glides to prevent friction with the floor. This chair is in very good condition, having been professionally cleaned, refurbished, and reupholstered in black and white pony leather. Not all chairs from the early years were labeled or embossed. Materials: round, bent, chromed, and sealed steel. All original black screws are still available. It is in perfect condition.
