Walter Lewy (1905-1995, Dortmund, Germany) was a Brazilian painter and illustrator of German origin, famous for his surreal and symbolic visual language. Forced to flee Nazi persecution, he immigrated to São Paulo in 1938, where he developed a rich body of work blending dreamlike imagery, spiritual connotations, and botanical references. A self-taught artist, Lewy created paintings, drawings, and graphic works often featuring fantastical figures, anthropomorphic forms, and abstract landscapes. His initial training in lithography and illustration influenced the precision of his compositions. In Brazil, he participated in important exhibitions, notably the São Paulo Biennials (1951, 1960, 1965, 1969), and organized retrospectives at the MAM-SP. Today, Lewy is recognized as a key figure in Brazilian Surrealism and the art of exile.
