The "Utrecht" wall rack (also known as DW 01) is a multifunctional wall rack designed by Constant Nieuwenhuys in 1956, commissioned by designer Martin Visser for furniture manufacturer Spectrum. Constant Nieuwenhuis was a Dutch visual artist and leading member of the Cobra art movement
Constant Nieuwenhuys, better known as Constant, was one of the founders and central figures of the Cobra movement, an influential avant-garde art movement active from 1948 to 1951.
What is the Cobra movement?
Cobra is an acronym for the capitals of the countries the founders came from:
Copenhagen (Denmark), Brussels (Belgium) and Amsterdam (the Netherlands).
The movement was officially founded in 1948 in Paris by Constant (Netherlands), Karel Appel (Netherlands), Corneille (Netherlands), Asger Jorn (Denmark) and Christian Dotremont (Belgium), among others.
Characteristics of the Cobra movement:
Spontaneity and expression: Cobra artists turned away from traditional art and sought spontaneity, intuition and direct expression.
Bright colors and playful forms: The work is characterized by vibrant colors, animal figures, people and symbols, often in a seemingly chaotic composition.
Collectivity and collaboration: Cobra was not only a style, but also a social movement. There was much collaboration and publication in magazines such as Cobra and Reflex.
Constant Nieuwenhuys' role
Constant was not only one of the founders, but also a theorist within the group. He was heavily involved in the formation of ideas and concerned with the social role of art. During the Cobra era, he worked on expressive paintings, often with themes of chaos, freedom and fantasy. Later he would move toward more utopian-social projects, such as his famous project New Babylon (1956-1974), in which he designed a world for the "creative man of the future.
Influence
Although Cobra was only active for a few years, the movement had a long-lasting influence on postwar art, especially in Europe. Its emphasis on expression and freedom helped pave the way for later abstract-expressionist and neo-expressionist movements.
