Volcano Iridescent Art Glass Vase – Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda, Artist Collection, 1981
A striking example from Bertil Vallien's celebrated Volcano series for Kosta Boda, produced in 1981 as part of the Swedish manufacturer's prestigious Artist Collection. Combining sculptural form, technical innovation, and an almost alchemical treatment of glass, the piece embodies the experimental spirit that established Vallien among the most influential Scandinavian glass artists of the twentieth century.
The vase is formed as a compact biomorphic vessel resting on a subtly divided base that creates the impression of two organically fused volumes. Rising from this rounded body is a slender neck executed in delicate violet tones, its surface animated by fine feather-like striations that contrast beautifully with the textured body below.
Most captivating is the extraordinary iridescent finish. The hammered surface catches and transforms light into shifting shades of deep violet, bronze, graphite, silver, and gold. Depending on the viewing angle, the vase appears almost metallic, recalling volcanic rock, oxidised minerals, or celestial surfaces. This constantly changing interplay of colour and reflection is a hallmark of the Volcano series and demonstrates Vallien's mastery of glass as a sculptural medium.
The underside retains the engraved signature "B. Vallien", Kosta Boda, together with the model number 48137 and the year 1981.
About Bertil Vallien
Born in 1938, Bertil Vallien is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in contemporary studio glass. After studying at Konstfack in Stockholm and the College of Arts, Crafts and Design in California, he joined Kosta Boda in 1963 and became one of the defining voices of Scandinavian glass design. While internationally celebrated for his sand-cast glass vessels and boats, his earlier production pieces from the Artist Collection reveal the same fascination with material transformation, mythology, and sculptural form.
The Volcano series occupies a special place within Vallien's oeuvre, combining artistic experimentation with production craftsmanship. These works are increasingly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian glass and post-war design.
