Product description
Volcanic centerpiece, Vallauris ceramics, Marius Musarra, Mabyjo's, 60's - France Material: Ceramic Manufacture: Mabyjo's Artist: Marius Musarra Period: 1960's Country of origin: Vallauris, France Good condition according to its age and use. Dimensions: 12 x 36 x 36 cm. Spectacular decorative centerpiece born in the emblematic ceramic center of Vallauris during the 1960s, elaborated by Marius Musarra for Mabyjo's. The design integrates a fat-lava effect glaze in black and white tones, whose crystalline and fragmented texture evokes solidified magma. The surface of the piece imitates that of cooled lava turned into volcanic rock, porous and irregular. The flank exhibits a curved rim coated with vibrant red glaze, while the spiked finials reinforce the sense of contained energy. Its asymmetrical shape and natural finish reinforce its sculptural presence, making the piece suitable as both a functional object and decorative sculpture. About Vallauris Vallauris was a pottery center that experienced great growth in the mid-19th century thanks to the arrival of the railroad. It finally established itself as a ceramic center with the arrival of post-impressionist and modern painters such as Chagall and Picasso, who looked to the oriental and the primitive for their source of inspiration. It was at this time that the large factories appeared, and with them, a real industrial and commercial organization in terms of ceramic production. Vallauris ceramics are of the highest quality in terms of both material and design. About Marius Musarra and Mabyjo's workshop A native of Sicily (1910), Musarra trained with his potter father and developed his trade also in Tunisia. In 1926 he moved to Vallauris, where he contributed to the creative revival of local ceramics, collaborating with his father-in-law Sauveur Lunetta, and eventually founding his atelier, Mabyjo's. His work stood out for uniting traditional artisanal methods with an expressive and modern aesthetic, winning multiple awards at the most prestigious biennials of contemporary ceramics.
