The Vitra Grand Relax armchair combines high-quality materials, such as cast aluminum, elegant fabrics, and premium leather. Antonio Citterio focused on the materials used in the armchair's design, giving the cushions a lived-in look. He therefore opted for exceptionally soft leather cushions that give each armchair a unique, relaxed look, and he primarily used cushions that develop an attractive patina with visible creases over time. The lower half of the outer backrest shell is covered in embossed split leather, forming a kind of shield that envelops the user and defines the contours of the lounge armchair. The combination of split leather and other materials creates a dynamic contrast between the armchair's interior and exterior. This contrast can be further emphasized by using different colors.
