The Viscontea pendant lamp, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos in 1960, emerged from one of the most groundbreaking material experiments in post-war Italian design. With this project, the Castiglioni brothers transformed technical research into expressive form through the Cocoon process: a fine synthetic resin sprayed over a steel frame to create an exceptionally light yet durable diffuser capable of emitting a warm, atmospheric glow.
Its presence is almost organic. Taut surfaces alternate with gentle curves, while the pronounced ribs shape a volume that recalls a naturally evolving form. Unlit, it reads as a suspended sculpture with remarkable visual lightness; when illuminated, the fibrous texture of the Cocoon material becomes visible, softly diffusing light and creating an intimate, welcoming atmosphere.
Today, the Viscontea remains one of the defining icons of Flos' experimental years and of the Castiglioni brothers' innovative approach, demonstrating how technical invention and sculptural beauty can coexist in a truly timeless object. It is a lamp that illuminates with subtlety while becoming the unmistakable focal point of any interior.
