Vintage Yajiro kokeshi by Kamata Bunichi from the 1970s. Kamata Bunichi (鎌田文市) (1900–1917) was a very prominent and influential Japanese kokeshi craftsman (kogin). He belonged to the traditional Yajiro style (Yajirō-kei). His work is not only beloved in Japan, but already decades ago achieved international recognition in the Western design world.Bunichi remained active at the lathe until a very old age. As can be seen on this doll, at a later age (from his 70s) he explicitly began to write his exact age on the bottom, as a sign of pride and vitality.The signature on the bottom of the doll confirms that it was made by Kamata Bunichi (鎌田文市) when he was 73 years old. He enjoyed great prestige within the kokeshi community and his dolls won prizes at various national craft exhibitions.The height is 15 cm, for the condition please view the photos.Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discolorations and/or cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
