Vintage Tsugaru Kokeshi by Toshiyuki Kojima. This special Tsugaru kokeshi doll was handmade by Toshiyuki Kojima (1949-2012), a master craftsman and key figure in preserving the Tsugaru kokeshi tradition from Aomori Prefecture. Toshiyuki Kojima was born on May 26, 1949, in Nayoro, Hokkaido, as the eldest son of craftsmen Shoichi and Kyoko Kojima. After elementary school, he moved to Aomori Prefecture to live with Zenji Sato, a master of the Tsugaru tradition, while attending Toei Junior High School in Kuroishi. Zenji Sato had opened a kokeshi workshop at the school, and Toshiyuki, who showed early talent, studied there before becoming Zenji's full-fledged apprentice in 1965. From then on, he underwent intensive training in wood carving, and by the late 1960s, he was making kokeshi in various styles, including the Sato Itaro and Kobei lines, along with his fellow apprentice Abo Rokuchihide. After Zenji Sato's death, Kojima continued the Tsugaru tradition with dedication, contributing to its preservation and growth. He eventually became chairman of the local craft association, a role that reflected his importance within the kokeshi community. His career was abruptly ended by his untimely death on December 14, 2012, at the age of 63, but his artistic talent and leadership left a strong legacy. His eldest daughter, Rinka, succeeded him and continued his style, ensuring the continuation of the Kojima family's contribution to Tsugaru kokeshi.
