Vintage "Tsubaki No Sato" Kokeshi By Sekiguchi Toa.
The doll features the typical oval/egg shape often associated with her designs. The painting on the front depicts a detailed kimono with striking red camellias and golden leaves, executed in a raised relief technique. The name means "City of Camellias." The back is solid black.
Sekiguchi Toa (関口東亜), born in 1942, hails from Gunma Prefecture (born in Shibukawa / Shinto) and comes from a prominent family of kokeshi makers; he is the son of the influential sōsaku master Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925–2018).
Toa Sekiguchi began creating creative kokeshi around 1966. Although his work builds upon the classical foundations of his father, it is known for its own refined and poetic visual language. His dolls are characterized by harmonious, elongated, or unique shapes (such as egg shapes), serene faces with often closed or half-closed eyes, deeply carved hair structures, and detailed kimono decorations.
He frequently uses beautifully painted mizuki wood (dogwood). His designs often feature natural and traditional motifs such as flowers (like camellias and plum blossoms), ginkgo leaves, wheat, and festival elements. He often combines painting with relief and woodworking techniques.
Over the years, Toa has won countless prestigious awards within the Japanese kokeshi world. For instance, in 1985 he received the Ministry of Education Prize (Monbusho Prize) at the National Modern Kokeshi Exhibition, and in 2001 he won the highly regarded Naikaku-soridaijinsho (Prime Minister's Prize).
