Product description
Vintage Togatta Kokeshi by Sato Mitsuoshi. Sato Mitsuoshi belongs to the prominent and extensive Sato family of woodworkers in the Tōhoku region. For generations, this family produced masters who laid the foundation for the Togatta line. Mitsuoshi learned the craft through the traditional Japanese family system, where complex woodworking techniques with a foot or hand lathe (rokuro) and refined painting were passed down from father to son (or through a master-apprentice relationship within the family). His most important active period was in the mid to late Shōwa period (approximately the 1950s to 1980s). This was the golden age of Kokeshi collecting culture in Japan, in which the dolls transformed from simple children's toys into highly valued folk art. His work is immediately recognized by collectors for its strict adherence to the aesthetic rules of the Togatta Onsen style. Mitsuoshi painted the characteristic serene, somewhat melancholic gaze that is so unique to Togatta. This includes the finely drawn, arched eyebrows, the slit eyes, and the subtle blush on the cheeks. The top of the head is decorated with red, successive stripes that mimic a stylized floral wreath or headband (kanzashi). On the sides of the head, the characteristic black locks run straight down. The cylindrical body of his dolls is hand-painted with successive red chrysanthemums (kiku), often combined with subtle black or purple-gray leaves. Dolls signed by Sato Mitsuoshi are considered authentic, high-quality examples of post-war Japanese folk art. Because traditional artisans at the time exclusively used local wood types (such as dogwood or cherry wood) and crafted everything by hand, each piece is unique. The height is 18 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Note: Kokeshi dolls are not new, so scratches, discolorations, or cracks will always be present to a greater or lesser extent.
