Vintage signed Togatta Kokeshi. This specific kokeshi aligns with the aesthetic of the Togatta region (遠刈田系), one of the traditional kokeshi styles from Miyagi Prefecture in the Tōhoku region. The Togatta style originated in the hot spring town (onsen) Togatta, located at the foot of the Zao Mountains. Kokeshis from this area are known for their refined, elegant appearance. They typically feature a somewhat slimmer or subtly shaped body, painted with floral patterns such as chrysanthemums or plum blossoms, and characteristic head painting. Traditional kokeshi (dentō kokeshi) are classified into about ten different styles, each with its own region and characteristics. The difference from other styles lies primarily in the shape and the painting. Togatta dolls often feature red rays or a crown of stripes on the top of their heads, and graceful black locks of hair framing the face. In styles such as Naruko, for instance, you often see that the head can peek out or that the doll has somewhat rounder, simpler head painting. Togatta dolls generally have a friendly, serene look with refined eyes and thin eyebrows. Other styles (such as Kijiyama or Tsugaru) can be drawn much more austere or, conversely, very expressive and minimalist. Many traditional styles (such as Hijiori or Yajirō) use bright concentric circles or bands on the body. Togatta, on the other hand, is known for the fact that the body is often beautifully decorated with floral motifs (such as chrysanthemums) applied by hand by the master. The height is 18 cm. Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
