Vintage Shingata Kokeshi by Yuji from 1983. Within the world of kokeshi, a distinction is usually made between two main categories: dentō kokeshi (the traditional, region-specific dolls) and shingata kokeshi (the modern, creative dolls). A true "transitional" category does not officially exist on its own, but literature and collectors do speak of a transitional phase or shingata transitional kokeshi. These are dolls made in the period when artisans just began to break with the strict, traditional rules of their region, but had not yet embraced the full abstract freedom of modern shingata. In addition, within traditional kokeshi, there are so-called kei (lines or sub-styles) that blend characteristics of different regions (such as the Ginzan-style which combines elements of Naruko, Hijiori, and Zaō Takayu), which is sometimes seen as an intermediate form or bridging function.
This is such a kokeshi. The doll is signed with the name Yuji and dated (1983). The height is 18 cm, for the condition please view the photos. Note: the kokeshi are not new, so there will always be scratches/discolorations/cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
