Vintage large Tsuchiyu Kokeshi by Abe Ichiro. This Kokeshi is distinguished by her refined and serene face, finely painted: delicate slanted eyes and a small, discreet mouth. The top of her head bears the characteristic motif of the Tsuchiyu school: concentric red and black circles forming a traditional headdress, adorned with stylized locks on the forehead. The body displays a warm, golden patina that has developed over time and testifies to its authenticity. The red and black paintwork has subtly faded over the decades, enhancing the poetic character of this piece. The body is decorated with simple, geometric linear patterns (horizontal bands), characteristic of this style. This unique handmade piece is signed by the master craftsman on the foot, guaranteeing its provenance. The Tsuchiyu style, originating from the famous hot springs region of Fukushima, is one of the most respected traditional schools in Japan. The style is known for the geometric patterns created on the lathe and the virtuosity of the work in natural wood. Abe Ichiro was born on January 8, 1925, as the eldest son of Shinjiro Abe and Yori Abe, woodworkers in Tsuchiyu Onsen, Fukushima Prefecture. Jisuke Abe was his uncle. From 1941, he learned woodworking from his father, Shinjiro. He also made kokeshi dolls but changed professions in 1943. After the war, in January 1955, he resumed making kokeshi dolls. Since then, he has continued making kokeshi dolls and ran a souvenir shop. In 1968, when Katsuhide Abe, the second husband of Shina Abe of Matsuya, began making kokeshi dolls, Ichiro taught him woodworking. In 1975, he also taught woodworking to Toshimasa Abe, Mitoya's eldest son. He passed away on August 6, 2000, at the age of 76. The height is 30 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Note: The kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
